Students have three options in nursing education at USU. Students can attend a one-year program to obtain a Certificate of Completion in Practical Nursing, that if successfully completed, allows students to apply for LPN licensure* and enter the job market; or if they are interested and qualified, can obtain an Associate of Applied Science Degree (AAS) in Nursing, that if successfully completed, allows them to apply for RN licensure. Currently, licensed LPNs who choose to continue their nursing education can also apply for entrance into the associate degree program. Students also may attend a four-year Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing (BSN) pre-licensure program**, that prepares them for eligibility to apply for RN licensure. Enrollment in the three programs is limited and competitive.

*Only available on the Blanding, Moab and Price campuses. In Tooele and Uintah Basin, Practical Nursing is offered through the Tooele and Uintah Basin Technical Colleges.

**Only available on the Logan campus and for students without previous nursing LPN or RN credentials.

Through this four-year program, students can obtain a Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, that if successfully completed allows them to apply for RN licensure. The BSN program also prepares students who are interested in obtaining a graduate degree in advanced nursing practice.

What You Will Learn

In the USU Nursing Program, nursing theory is correlated with knowledge from the biological, physical, and behavioral sciences, as well as experiences in the classroom. Students learn in nursing skills laboratory and clinical settings such as acute care hospitals, extended care facilities, ambulatory clinics, home care and other health related environments. The Program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, Inc. (ACEN) and approved by the Utah State Board of Nursing.

Career Opportunities

A bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree prepares you for a job as a registered nurse. While you can work as an RN with an associate's degree, nurses with a BSN are typically given more responsibility, supervisory roles and higher salaries. A BSN offers a wide range of career options in the nursing field and RNs with this credential have the ability to specialize in a certain area of nursing and pursue leadership and management roles. Additionally, the BSN prepares students for graduate education in advanced practice nursing.

Admission

Admission Requirements

Admission to the Nursing Program is a separate process from admission to the University. Enrollment is limited and competitive. Points are allocated based on GPA, work experience, and entrance exam results. Candidates will be notified by email of admission status. An application for admission is in effect for only one year. Applications for fall admission are available January 1 to February 15 each year*. Applications for spring admission are available July 1 to August 15.

A minimum grade of B- is required for all prerequisites, which must be completed by the semester prior to admission.
