About This Minor
The Film Studies (FILM) minor offers students from across USU the opportunity to examine in-depth histories and theories of film.
Teaching students to interpret and analyze films from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives the minor offers courses from multiple departments and programs. In an ever-increasing media-dominated and image-saturated world it enhances visual and media literacy, developing important skills of research, critical thinking, and cultural and visual analysis.
The minor would complement any major offered at USU but might be of particular relevance for students in Art History, Communication, English, Education, History, Journalism, World Languages, Sociology, and Political Science.
What You Will Learn
Students completing the Film Studies minor will acquire foundational skills in the language and practice of film analysis, history, and theory. This will in turn create the ability to analyze film using the appropriate critical language and terminology as well as to understand, synthesize and clearly articulate information and arguments.
Familiarity with a broad range of world cinemas and genres will allow students to situate films in their wider national, historical, social, and cultural contexts. There are also multiple opportunities to work with faculty across multiple disciplines taking independent studies on student-led topics such as screenwriting and film production or in-depth investigations into specific film directors, genres, or national cinemas.
